Background and Discussion:
The WIC Grant is awarded annually with a fiscal year beginning October 1 through September 30. The WIC Program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support and education, supplemental foods, and referrals to social service programs to eligible participants. Typical expenses include salaries, temporary staff, fees, and services such as janitorial services, supplies, and rent for lease payments, etc. A new federally procured Janitorial Services contract is needed to find a well-qualified vendor to provide janitorial services for various Women, Infant, and Children clinics for Harris County Public Health.
Expected Impact:
Since its beginning in 1974, the WIC Program has earned the reputation of being one of the most successful federally funded nutrition programs in the United States. Studies have found WIC to have a positive effect on children's diet and diet-related outcomes such as an increase in diet nutrient density, improved infant feeding practices, improved cognitive development, and improved rates of childhood immunization of patients who participate in WIC. The approval of the new contract award allows the program to receive janitorial cleaning services from a well-qualified vendor for their designated locations and facilities that together service over 40,000 Harris County residents every month. WIC in conjunction with Harris County Purchasing, has solicited bids that best meets the specifications and requirements in accordance with the Harris County Purchasing Office’s Procurement Policy and Federal Procurements.
Alternative Options:
This program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support and education, supplemental foods, and referrals to social service programs for 40,000 Harris County residents every month. There are no alternatives for this program due to its size and scope. Providing the program with a vendor that will provide quality janitorial services is essential in that it will help preserve the health and safety of its employees and participants.
