Background and Discussion:

Harris County Public Health (HCPH) was awarded $347,968 in funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the Year 5 budget period to support the development of strategic partnerships and policies aimed at preventing childhood lead poisoning and other housing-related health hazards. This funding was presented to and approved by Commissioners Court on November 13, 2025, and is recorded as Court Item 25-7191. Through this program, HCPH focuses on primary prevention by partnering with organizations and community stakeholders to deliver lead education presentations and participate in outreach events targeting vulnerable and at-risk populations. The program also supports secondary prevention efforts by improving lead screening practices through education and training for public health professionals and pediatric healthcare providers, including guidance on State reporting forms. In addition, HCPH conducts home visits for families with children who have elevated blood lead levels to provide education and support. To sustain these ongoing lead prevention and education initiatives across Harris County communities, carryover funds from Years 1 through 4 will be applied to the Year 5 budget period. The total carryover amount requested is $55,550.92.
