title

Request for approval of a certain project, decreeing the project to be a public necessity and convenience, and directing the Harris County Real Property Division to acquire, one (1) fee simple tract for the public project known as Roadway - Sweetwater Lane - from West Mount Houston to West Canino Road - P2 - 2022, for the purpose of roadway construction, UPIN 23102MF2US01, Precinct 2.

Background and Discussion:

The Sweetwater Lane project will reconstruct the existing asphalt pavement and provide a 27-feet wide typical

concrete pavement section from face of curb to face of curb, centered in the existing right-of-way with 6-feet wide sidewalks and ADA ramps on either side. The proposed design replaces existing open ditches with an underground storm sewer system, including inlets, and regrades the roadway profile to improve drainage and capture stormwater from outside the right-of-way.

Expected Impact:

The project supports Precinct 2's ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and accommodate increased economic activity within the corridor.

The improvements will enhance pedestrian safety through the addition of sidewalks, METRO bus stops, and marked crosswalks. Drainage upgrades will reduce flooding risks, improving safety and accessibility for residents, businesses, and motorists. Overall, the project will strengthen mobility and reliability within the corridor's transportation network.

 Alternative Options:

The project requires acquisition of property for construction of a detention basin to meet drainage requirements. Without the detention basin, the project will not achieve its drainage objectives, and the corridor will continue to experience the same flooding conditions it faces today, negatively impacting adjacent residents and businesses.

The identified parcel is the only undeveloped property suitable for acquisition that meets the drainage design requirements as determined by the drainage engineer.
