Background and Discussion:
The Harris County Sheriff's Training Academy opened its doors in 2006, and it was a vast improvement over the previous facility. The main building has eight classrooms, a library, a multi-purpose room, a weight room, a student lounge, student locker rooms/showers, rest rooms, staff lounge, staff locker rooms/showers, and storage rooms. The facility includes the Deputy Mike Faas Firearms complex, which consists of five shooting ranges, a building with 3 offices, 3 classrooms, storage space, workroom, and restrooms. Currently the Academy is significantly restricted to hosting no more than two BPOC classes per year.
Expected Impact:
Approval of this Professional Services contract will provide a Technical Consultant to the HCSO for
Expansion of the existing facility to meet the demands of the future it will be necessary to double our footprint at the HCSO Academy. At least two large classrooms that can accommodate up to 100 students with the flexibility to be sectioned off into four smaller classrooms.
Alternative Options:
The County could elect to reject the request. However, if not approved, the lack of Technical Consultant advising the HCSO the inhibit the ability provide sufficient space for instructional training to new Sheriff’s deputies.
