Request Summary (Agenda Caption):
title
Request by Universal Services, the Office of the County Engineer, and the Sheriff’s Office for approval to accept from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Government Alternative Fuel Fleet Grant Program grant funds in the amount of $230,000, with no required match, to purchase 10 new class 2/3 electric vehicles (Contract ID: 582-25-71194).
end
Background and Discussion:
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) - Governmental Alternative Fuel Fleet Grant Program provides grants to purchase or lease new vehicles that operate primarily on compressed natural gas, liquified natural gas, liquified petroleum gas (propane), hydrogen fuel cells, or electricity.
This project, if awarded, will contribute grant funds toward the individual purchase of 10 new class 2/3 electric vehicles.
Fleet electrification is one of many efforts aimed at reducing County’s greenhouse emissions. Based on a 2024 Harris County Fleet analysis, electrifying 40% of County's light-duty vehicles would reduce more than 8,900 metric tons of CO2 on a yearly basis.
Expected Impact:
Replacing older Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles with new Electric Vehicles (EVs) will contribute to emission reduction efforts and save the County maintenance costs.
Alternative Options:
Not applying for this grant would mean the County misses the opportunity to recuperate some cost associated with upgrading and electrifying the County fleet.
