Background and Discussion:

Connecting female youth with STEM and outdoor recreation activities can be a challenge.  At Precinct 3 we are fortunate to have parks with excellent recreational and environmental education opportunities along with knowledgeable dedicated staff eager to introduce youth and adults alike to the wonders of our natural spaces while making connections with our natural environment through outdoor recreation.

Expected Impact:

If awarded, grant funds will be used to purchase supplies and equipment and cover staff time to deliver six programmed events to be held during the grant period of performance of April 16, 2025 through September 1, 2026.  These events include three school tours at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve for students at participating Aldine ISD schools, two overnight family campouts at the Scout Camping Area in Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve, and one overnight family campout at Redbud Hill Homestead in Jesse Jones Park.  Activities will include educational visits by Texas Parks and Wildlife staff, paddling kayaks and canoes, archery, hands-on aquatic and natural science study, participation in City Nature Challenge activities, and learning basic tent camping skills including setting up campsites and Leave No Trace practices.  Additional activities, including leading Project WILD workshops for teachers and follow-up STEM and TEKS aligned outreach at the participating Aldine ISD schools, will also be completed.

We anticipate hosting a minimum of 300 unduplicated participants in total across these six events.  Of the 300 participants, 250 will be students and more than 165 (55%) will be female.
