Background and Discussion:

Texas Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) is a federally funded law enforcement program run by the Traffic Safety Division at the Texas Department of Transportation. The goal of the STEP program is for TxDOT to develop partnerships with law enforcement to reduce crashes by creating safer driving environments on Texas roadways through high-visibility enforcement. STEP grants provide federal funding for overtime enforcement activities conducted by Texas law enforcement agencies.

The Constables of Precinct 5 participate in the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) annually making enforcement of impaired driving their top priority. Enforcement will occur during the following holiday periods: Christmas/New Years, Spring Break, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.

Expected Impact:

The goal is to reduce crashes, fatalities, and injuries, through high visibility enforcement and public education making Harris County safer and more just.
