Background and Discussion:

The Community-Based Maternal Behavioral Health Services Program provides support to enhance access to comprehensive perinatal mental health services aimed at reducing the risks of maternal morbidity and mortality associated with perinatal anxiety and depression among mothers, fathers, and other caregivers. The program aims to create a support network for birthing individuals, ensuring a secure environment for families to receive essential mental health support. Harris County Public Health is seeking funds to expand its Maternal Mental Health Program, which identifies pregnant individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance abuse challenges and connects them with behavioral health care services at HCPH and across Harris County.

Expected Impact:

By offering targeted preventive mental health interventions for birthing individuals, HCPH aims to reduce perinatal anxiety and depression, thereby lowering maternal morbidity and mortality rates across Harris County. Establishing a supportive care network will create a safe environment for families during the prenatal and postpartum periods, ensuring they receive essential mental health support. This approach is anticipated to enhance the overall birthing experience, promote healthier family dynamics, and improve long-term outcomes for both parents and children.
