Project Description:
The Mosquito Control Chemical Storage Building at 6104 Dixie Drive is a critical facility for storing chemicals used in Harris County's mosquito control operations. Following reports that "the building is in severe distress," the Harris County Engineering Department engaged BMG Structural Engineers to perform a structural evaluation.
BMG Structural Engineers determined that the floor is overstressed and exceeds design capacity under current loading conditions. The building is leaning toward the adjacent train tracks, with major floor cracking and a noticeable slope. The engineers concluded that the floor must not be subjected to forklift traffic or any additional live loads. The building is unsafe and cannot be used in its current condition.
This project will improve the condition of the foundation and floor system to restore and enhance the facility to a safe operating condition and maintain operational continuity for this essential public health function.

Justification & Alternatives:
Three alternatives were evaluated. The recommended option provides the fastest restoration of operations at the lowest cost. This is the most cost-effective solution. It will include removing the overstressed floor, shoring up the foundation, pouring a new floor with a secondary containment and repairing the building envelope in about a six-week construction timeline.
