Background and Discussion:

This Community Programs to Improve Minority Health Grant Program supports projects that utilize community-level public health innovations and collaborative networks to increase the use of preventative health services and encourage healthy living choices. The goal of the program is to advance progress toward addressing Leading Health Indicator targets for residents across different age groups by alleviating obstacles associated with social determinants of health. Harris County Public Health is seeking funding through this grant initiative to build on existing efforts and strategic priorities related to maternal and child health.

Expected Impact:

This grant opportunity aligns with the HCPH’s Health Promotion strategic direction, which focuses on improving access to health and social services and advocating for residents and community partners to actively engage in their individual and community health and well-being. Specifically, the funds will provide substantial resources to address Objective 3.2.4: Develop a multi-stakeholder approach to reduce maternal and infant mortality and promote healthy starts for babies.

Alternative Options:

The court could choose to reject this request to apply for the grant which would result in a setback for HCPH's outreach efforts, directly impacting residents who rely on these services. Without the funding and resources from the grant, HCPH may struggle to reach vulnerable populations effectively, leading to limited access to crucial healthcare services, education, and preventive programs. This could increase health disparities, impede progress toward addressing maternal and child disparities, and leave many residents without essential support, ultimately compromising their well-being and quality of life.
