Background and Discussion:

Harris County Public Health (HCPH) was awarded and received funding from CDC to develop strategic partnerships and policies to prevent childhood lead poisoning and other housing-related health hazards. The program maintains its focus on initiating primary prevention activities by partnering with organizations and stakeholders to provide lead presentations and participate in outreach events aimed at targeted and vulnerable populations. It also promotes secondary prevention efforts by enhancing lead testing through the education of public health professionals and pediatric healthcare providers on State Reporting forms. Additionally, the program conducts home visits for families with children who have elevated blood lead levels.

Expected Impact:

The Harris County Public Health Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program supports the strategy related to; 1. develop strategic partnerships and policies to implement targeted, population- based interventions aimed at primary prevention of lead exposure with a focus on community-based approaches for lead hazard elimination.
