title

Request by the Sheriff’s Office for approval to accept from the U.S. Department of Justice grant funds in the amount of $625,000, with a cash match of $697,965, for the FY 2024 COPS Hiring Program, and of five positions effective November 16, 2024.

Background and Discussion:

The grant application was approved in Commissioners Court on June 25, 2024. The COPS Hiring project would focus on crimes against children. The grant would enable our agency to hire 5 entry level deputies, one of whom must be a military veteran. Our agency would then transfer 3 experienced deputies into the Child Abuse Unit and 2 experienced deputies into the Human Trafficking Unit. The COPS Hiring program requires that each grant funded position be retained for at least 12 months after the three year grant period ends.

Expected Impact:

The awarded funds would support the Harris County Sheriff's Office to serve more children who are victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, and child trafficking and exploitation.

Alternative Options:

If our agency does not accept the grant award, the Sheriff’s Office would forfeit the opportunity to receive funds to support additional personnel to investigate Crimes against Children within Harris County.
