Request Summary (Agenda Caption):
title
Request for discussion and possible action related to Commissioners Court’s April 16 directives to reduce barriers and strengthen support for early childhood providers and families in Harris County.
end
Background and Discussion:
Harris County has a shortage of affordable, high-quality childcare, driven in part by barriers that limit provider capacity and families’ ability to access care. These include cost pressures, workforce challenges, and complex systems. This item outlines potential local actions to improve access for families, support providers, and align partners.
To address these challenges, Commissioners Court took unanimous action on April 16, 2026, to advance strategies aimed at reducing barriers for childcare providers, expanding access for families, improving coordination across County systems, and strengthening the early childhood ecosystem.
This item is to receive updates from the Office of County Administration (OCA), the Department of Economic Equity and Opportunity (DEEO), and Intergovernmental and Global Affairs (IGA) on these directives, including preliminary findings, stakeholder engagement efforts, proposed next steps, and recommendations.
Expected Impact:
Advancing these actions is expected to increase provider capacity, improve access to care for families, and strengthen coordination across partners.
