Background and Discussion:
Affectionately dubbed as the “Mayor of South Belt,” Marie Flickinger devoted much of her adult life to the creation of and the advancement of the South Belt community in southeast Houston.
She founded the South Belt Press newspaper in 1976 and worked there until her passing in 2024. Marie was best known for a series of investigative articles in the 1980s that exposed the dumping of toxic waste near Beamer and Dixie Farm Road at a location that would later be known as the Brio Superfund site.
In the 1990s she became the first female elected to serve on the San Jacinto College Board of Trustees, a position she would hold for nearly 30 years. Flickinger also worked closely with Pasadena ISD and was named the school district’s Distinguished Citizen of the Year in 2015.
In 2018, Flickinger was recognized by Gov. Greg Abbott, receiving a Governor’s Volunteer Award for her emergency efforts during Hurricane Harvey.
Flickinger’s involvement in the South Belt community also included coordinating the annual Fourth of July parade and fireworks display, the annual South Belt Spectacular Cook-off and the annual South Belt-Ellington Leader Christmas drive for needy families in the area.
