Background and Discussion: On Dec. 10th, 2024, Commissioners Court approved authorization to initiate the design and construction of the expansion to the Harris County Sheriff’s Training Academy. The Harris County Sheriff's Training Academy opened its doors in 2006, and it was a vast improvement over the previous facility. The main building has eight classrooms, a library, a multi-purpose room, a weight room, a student lounge, student locker rooms/showers, rest rooms, staff lounge, staff locker rooms/showers, and storage rooms. The facility includes the Deputy Mike Faas Firearms complex, which consists of five shooting ranges, a building with 3 offices, 3 classrooms, storage space, workroom, and restrooms. Currently the Academy is significantly restricted to hosting no more than two BPOC classes per year.
Expected Impact:
Advertisement of the CMAR will allow the County to have a General Contractor under contract to work with the County during the design phases to help manage the budget, schedule, and to help procure long-lead items that will be needed for the Expansion of the existing facility to meet the demands of the future.
Alternative Options: The alternative would be to not use a CMAR that would aid the county with long-lead items, constructability reviews, value engineering and cost estimating services. This would likely lengthen the completion schedule.
