Background and Discussion:
The Emancipation National Historic Trail extends approximately 51 miles following the migration route taken by newly freed slaves and other persons of African descent from the major 19th century seaport town of Galveston to the burgeoning community of Freedmen's Town located in the Fourth Ward of Houston, Texas. The bike ride will showcase the Emancipation Trail Route while celebrating Juneteenth and the successful passage of the bill sponsored by Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee to name the route the Emancipation Trail. Participants will enjoy a healthy activity that improves strength, balance, and coordination while learning about the history of what is only the second national historic trail in the United States. The ride will make stops along the way so that participants can learn about Emancipation history and various historic landmarks.
