Background and Discussion:
From April 1-9, 2026, the Artemis II mission flew to moon and back to earth. A crew of four astronauts led this historic mission, flying a record 252,756 miles from Earth, surpassing the previous record of 248,655 miles for a crewed mission. The former record had been set by the Apollo 13 astronauts in 1970.

Artemis II Mission Control, located at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Southeast Houston, operated 24/7 in three shifts to manage the 10-day, crewed lunar flyby.

The mission launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It spent a day in high-Earth orbit before Orion's main engine propelled the astronauts toward the moon. The crew used a gravity assist to fly around the moon and come back home.

During the lunar flyby, the crew spent about six hours observing the lunar surface. The astronauts used colorful language, describing features as a piece of pie or a dinosaur footprint, to convey their views to scientists.
