Background and Discussion:
The United States Federal Government began on October 1, 2025, and impacts millions of Americans, and Harris County families. As of November 4, 2025, it is the longest federal shutdown in United States history. In Harris County over 300,400 families rely on SNAP benefits for food assistance; nearly 40,000 households are on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families; and there are over 100 head start centers serving low-income children. This item will discuss the effects of the shutdown on Harris County residents and what action Harris County may consider to address those impacts.
