Background and Discussion:
The purpose of the Language Access Community Focus Groups is to convene multiple groups of local community leaders from the Chinese, Vietnamese, and Arabic speaking community to guide Harris County language access planning. The Language Access Team seeks to work with the Chinese Community Center, Boat People SOS, and Connect Community to host these focus groups in early October. These organizations represent the language groups that have the highest number of limited English proficient (LEP) residents yet are underrepresented in County programs and services. The focus groups and the residents involved will provide insight into lived experience as limited English proficient community members in the County, such as awareness of County programs and services, understanding of language access services within the County, and potential barriers faced. This feedback will directly be utilized by the Language Access Team as qualitative data to inform the recommendations in a Harris County Language Access Plan.
