title
Request for approval of a policy to pay employees for overtime related to a disaster.
end
Background and Discussion:
Commissioners Court directed the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to develop a policy to pay employees for overtime for work related to a disaster that is not declared by the state or federal government. Attached is a policy for consideration that addresses both declared and non-declared disasters. The policy has been reviewed by the County Attorney's Office and Human Resources and Talent.
Expected Impact:
The policy will provide compensation to employees who are required to perform duties under extraordinary circumstances because of a disaster. Since employees would be paid overtime in lieu of earning compensatory time, there will be a financial impact for reimbursing county departments from the Public Improvement Contingency (PIC) Fund.
Alternative Options:
Commissioners Court could choose not to adopt this policy, and employees would just earn compensatory time instead of overtime pay. It should be noted that exempt employees cease accruing compensatory time once they reach 240 hours and are not compensated beyond the maximum.
