Background and Discussion: Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation (the Foundation) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, charitable organization created by the Bush family to improve the quality of lives through the power of literacy. The Foundation advocates for literacy as a fundamental right for everyone and views literacy as a necessary skill to achieve individual, family, and community success.

Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, in partnership with Harris County Public Library and Ladies for Literacy, is a founder of the HCPL Curiosity Cruiser program. The Curiosity Cruiser program is 4-vehicle state-of-the-art mobile library fleet operated by HCPL that provides Houston children with access to books and exciting educational programs that integrate reading with science, math, technology, writing, and the arts.

Expected Impact: Attendance at this event will allow Harris County Public Library to network with current and potential donors to help fund current and new programs.

Alternative Options: HCPL could not attend this luncheon and miss out on potential funding for current and future programs, thus leaving citizens with the same or fewer library services, or needing to request additional dollars from the Harris County General Fund.
