Family violence is a significant issue in the United States and Harris County. Commissioners Court has raised the concern in previous courts. On 10/31/23 Commissioners Court meeting, the report, Safe Homes: Recommendations for Reducing Family Violence in Harris County, was transmitted and discussed at Court. This report identified emerging best practices to support survivors better and reduce and prevent victimization, as well as, what, specifically, Harris County is currently doing. Additionally, recommendations on what the County should continue to do to support survivors are discussed. One of the recommendations was the possible creation of a domestic violence court.
At the December 5, 2023 Commissioners Court, a possible veteran's docket was discussed. As part of this discussion, a domestic violence docket was included. A motion was made by Commissioner Ramsey, seconded by Commissioner Garcia to have VSD, County Courts, Justice Stakeholders, OCA, and the Budget Office consider a Veteran's Docket, Domestic Violence Docket, Mental Health Docket, and other specialty courts based on the framework of the existing RIC Docket and for an update at the first quarter of 2024. This motion was carried unanimously.
