Background and Discussion:
June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month and presents an opportunity to raise awareness about gun violence and emphasize the importance of education and prevention efforts. Gun violence is the leading cause of death among people under 18 years of age; in 2022, 8 out of every 100,000 Texans aged 12 to 17 were killed by guns. Between 2017 and 2019, African American Texans aged 17 and under died in gun-related incidents at twice the rate of their white and Hispanic counterparts.
